Ibutamoren (also known as ibutamoren mesylate or MK-677) is often mentioned in discussions about bodybuilding and muscle gain in general. However, clinical studies on it are relatively limited. It does this by mimicking the action of the hormone ghrelin, binding to ghrelin receptors in the brain; when activated, growth hormone secretion increases.
Ghrelin receptors are located in the part of the brain that is also responsible for appetite, pleasure, mood, biological rhythms, memory and our ability to learn; therefore, it is logical to assume that Ibutamoren will also affect them. At the moment, only its effect on appetite has been studied. Expectedly, like ghrelin, taking MK-677 leads to its enhancement.
One of the great advantages of Ibutamoren is that it increases growth hormone levels without having or with minimal effect on other hormones, especially cortisol. This is important because cortisol is a catabolic hormone and its high concentration suppresses the immune system, slows wound healing, impairs memory, and increases muscle breakdown.

– Helps build muscle
MK-677 is often used for its anabolic properties, which help increase lean muscle mass. It is taken orally, once a day, which is much more convenient than most other growth hormone-stimulating products. The increased amount of growth hormone (and insulin-like growth factor-1) in the body has other benefits besides building muscle – strength also increases and body fat decreases.

The fact is that scientific studies on this topic currently do not exist. MK-677 could improve cognitive functions in two indirect ways – by increasing insulin-like growth factor-1 (which has a beneficial effect on memory and learning) and by improving the quality and duration of sleep (which is important for cognitive abilities).
A study was also conducted to determine whether taking MK-677 could have a beneficial effect on the treatment of Alzheimer’s, but unfortunately the results were negative.
– A successful remedy for growth hormone deficiency
In children with growth hormone deficiency, Ibutamoren administration may increase growth hormone levels, as well as insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3). However, the concentration of prolactin, glucose, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, thyrotropin, cortisol, and insulin in the body does not change.
In men with severe growth hormone deficiency, MK-677 increases growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1, with minimal changes in cortisol, thyroid hormone, and prolactin levels; however, insulin and glucose levels are increased.
– Potential for accelerated wound healing and tissue regeneration
Since growth hormone promotes tissue regeneration and wound healing, it makes sense that MK-677 would be beneficial in this regard as well. There are some claims that this is indeed the case, although no comprehensive scientific studies have been conducted on the subject.
– It could be a hangover cure
It may sound like an anecdote, but some people who use Ibutamoren have actually said that their hangovers disappeared after using it.
Side effects
The most common side effects of MK-677 use are increased appetite, mild swelling that quickly resolves, and mild muscle pain. In some cases, increased blood glucose and decreased insulin sensitivity have been observed. The described side effects are also common in people with high levels of growth hormone, especially insulin resistance and joint and muscle pain.
It is worth noting that one study was stopped prematurely due to much more serious side effects. In elderly patients with hip fractures, taking Ibutamoren led to increased heart pressure, high blood glucose levels, and even cases of congestive heart failure (the latter only in patients over 80 who had suffered from heart failure before).
